BIO-REM E-D is a granular (powdered) bacteria/enzyme waste digester. It is an industrial strength product for use in grease traps and problem sewer and drain lines.

Grease is the single largest problem in waste treatment. It causes stoppages and odors; it congeals with other substances; and it requires specialized treatment and disposal.

Grease is derived from several sources: kitchen waste, human waste, and interaction of hard water with soap and detergents. For this reason, BIO-REM E-D contains several strains of enzyme-producing micro-organisms to effectively break down grease and the other forms of sewage that cause blockages, backups, and odors.

•For best results, use BIO-REM E-D according to a planned maintenance schedule.


•Apply BIO-REM E-D just before periods of lowest flow. The longer BIO-REM E-D is retained, the better it works.


•Do not use in conjunction with bleach, disinfectants, or harsh drain-cleaning chemicals, as these will inactivate the bacterial action of BIO-REM E-D.

The Problem: Grease and its disposal are the biggest problems facing most food service facilities. Hot water dissolves kitchen grease and deposits it into the plumbing lines. As the water cools in the pipes, grease congeals with debris in the water. This material then adheres to the interior surfaces of the pipes. Garbage grinders compound the problem by adding raw food particles to the congealed grease. Failure to clean out this grease/food buildup causes slow drainage, foul odors, and eventual stoppage.

The Remedy: BIO-REM E-D is a USDA-Authorized, food-grade product that can be used safely in all commercial kitchens. It is non-pathogenic, is tested salmonella-free, and has no odor of its own. BIO-REM E-D removes the causes of clogging and odors by digesting grease and other food matters that build up in waste lines.

Cleanout dosage: Note: Where buildup is severe, treat drains closest to waste lines leading out of the building first. Where a grease trap is present, treat grease trap first. (See section on grease traps). Treat at closing or prior to time of lowest flow to maximize retention. Apply the following dosage daily for one week. Pre-mix or flush all dosages with at least two cups of lukewarm water.


Maintenance Dosage: Apply same dosages as recommended daily for cleanout on weekly schedule for maintenance. Flush all dosages with water. Treat at closing or prior to period of lowest flow to maximize retention time.


The Problem: Grease traps are designed to intercept and hold all commercial kitchen grease before it gets to a septic tank system or municipal sewer line. If designed properly, grease traps should be of a size adequate to handle the grease flow. Grease traps should also be designed with baffles or should be compartmentalized in order to slow the grease in the trap enough so that it cools and congeals on the interior surfaces of the trap. If the hot grease does not slow and congeal, it will short circuit though the grease trap and contaminate the septic tank system or sewer system. Grease traps range in size from 10-gallon capacity to many thousand-gallon capacity. If traps are not properly maintained, grease removal from small traps is a very objectionable task, and larger traps can become so full and hard that the grease is nearly impossible to pump out.



The Remedy: BIO-REM E-D is a USDA-Authorized, food-grade product that will hydrolyze and digest the grease in grease traps. Regular use of BIO-REM E-D in small traps will eliminate odors and the need for hand cleaning. In larger traps, regular use of BIO-REM E-D will keep grease loose enough to pump; it will extend intervals between pumpouts; and it will eliminate odors. BIO-REM E-D is formulated to digest grease, not merely emulsify and suspend grease. BIO-REM E-D actually helps to settle suspended grease and other solids. (Note: a grease trap is only a grease trap if it traps grease. Any facility with a grease trap that is not baffled or compartmentalized should consider upgrading their grease trap to avoid septic failure or sewer system contamination.)

Cleanout dosage: If trap is solid grease, clean mechanically prior to treatment. Treat at closing or prior to period of lowest flow. Per 100-gallon trap capacity, apply 8 tablespoons of BIO-REM E-D directly to the trap. Flush with water. Treat daily or until grease is gone.

Maintenance dosage: Per 100-gallon trap capacity, apply 4 tablespoons BIO-REM E-D with one cup of water directly into grease trap or into a drain that leads directly to the trap. Flush with at least one cup of water. Apply maintenance dosage twice weekly or as needed to control solids and odor. If grease trap capacity is inadequate to handle grease flow, larger dosage of BIO-REM E-D may be required. If facility generates unusually large amount of grease, larger dosages may be required. (Note: these are “rule of thumb” dosages. Each facility is different. A certain amount of dosage adjustment may be required to best suit the needs of each individual facility.)


The Problem: semi-digested grease and/or organic solid material is suspended in the grease trap or septic tank. This suspended material overflows into the septic system soil absorption area, causing sluggish drainage and eventual failure. Septic systems are designed to retain and digest solids in the septic tank. Buildup of solids in the soil absorption area is due to neglect, inadequate retention time, or hydraulic over-load. Soil absorption failure results in contamination, pollution, and requires excavation to replace.


The Remedy: It is best to remove as much solid material from the line as possible mechanically, either with high-pressure jetter or cable machine. This alone will provide a limited amount of short-term drainage. Soil facturing is another means of providing short-term drainage. Following that short-term drainage with shock dosage of BIO-REM E-D will percolate into the soil pores and digest the solids buildup, restoring drainage.

Cleanout Dosage: (Note: Soil temperature of 50°F. or higher is recommended to treat drain fields.) Mix one pound of BIO-REM E-D with at least one gallon lukewarm (NOT HOT) water per every 10 lineal feet of 4” perforated field line. Allow BIO-REM E-D to activate in water for at least 30 minutes and not more than 4 hours prior to application. Apply solution directly to soil absorption area either through distribution box or discharge pipe from septic tank. Expect results in 7-10 days. If buildup is especially heavy and complete restoration is not attained in first application a second dosing may be required.
